Call of the Day: McCarver on Timmy’s Brain Fart, “I Have No Idea What Happened Here.”

Posted by Dan Levy.

Only a play like this could have Tim McCarver spin the phrase, “I have no idea what happened here,” and EVERYONE would agree with him.

In the first inning of Game One of the World Series, Tim Lincecum got himself into quite a jam by not capitalizing on a ball that was supposed to get him out of it. We have no idea what happened here.

KNBR: ”He’s running toward third and did Lincecum think it’s a foul ball?”

“He must have. Nobody can believe what they just saw.”

KRLD: ”Lincecum didn’t throw the ball. Young is safe at third, Lincecum had a brain lock. And the bases are loaded with nobody out.”

“Well that is absolutely stunning. And that’s the reaction to this crowd.”

Lincecum got out of the jam and the Giants went on to roll through Cliff Lee and the Rangers so this isn’t much more than a funny story to add some context to the Series when people look back at Game One. Timmy called it a “brain fart,” as you can see by the post game transcript below.

I actually hate the term “brain fart” as it gives the connotation that your brain is emitting gas that’s causing you screw up. You know how much pressure your brain would be under if it didn’t let that gas out? Have you ever tried to hold in a fart? Of course you have. Now imagine that pressure building up IN YOUR BRAIN. It might cause poor decisions, yes?

So, a brain fart should probably be a good thing for your brain. At the very least, it shouldn’t be blamed for something as ridiculous as fielding a ground ball near the mound and walking a runner back to third without actually trying to get him out. From the post-game presser:

Q. Could you talk about those first couple innings. It looked pretty shaky there, particularly the play at third. What were you thinking?

TIM LINCECUM: Yeah, a little bit of a brain fart there, not really knowing the situation. Obviously those aren’t the kind of situations you want to be in. But we got out of it with just that one run. But after a couple innings the team gave me a chance to kind of settle down, scored their runs, and gave me a chance to just kind of get into my mode there for a few innings.

Q. Tim, you said you had a brain fart at third. You thought there were two runners coming in?

TIM LINCECUM: Yeah, pretty much.

Q. Also, did you feel, and Fred talked about being nervous at the beginning of the playoffs. Did you feel some sort of tension or nervousness that you didn’t feel before?

TIM LINCECUM: Maybe a little bit because it is the World Series. It’s a first for a lot of us and different kind of atmosphere. But you try to use what you’ve been through these last couple series with us to help you through it, and obviously I just kind of got outside of myself there, and like I said, made that brain fart.

Good to know there’s a plausible explanation. That was really, really weird.
