Here’s Something Stuart Scott Hasn’t Been Accused of Being Before

Posted by Dan Levy.

Full credit to Richard Deitsch for finding this one. He deserves all the credit. For nearly giving me a heart attack.

Here is Tom Jones of TampaBay.com’s two cents complaining that on a post-game interview with Stuart Scott, Matt Millen and Steve Young, Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis got handshakes and, gasp, a fist bump. What about the journalism?

First Young, seated next to Lewis, reaches over and shakes his hand. Then Millen follows with a handshake. Then, incredibly, Scott, who is seated at the opposite end from Lewis, has to literally get out of his chair so he can give Lewis a fist-bump. Why didn’t ESPN just cater the whole thing and the four could’ve had dinner together? Is this a news show or Merv Griffin? It’s not just that they shook Lewis’ hand, it’s how they did it, all chummy-chummy like they’re all in this together.

Scott should know better. Of everyone on the panel, he is supposed to the real journalist. Millen and Young need to realize that they don’t play anymore and their careers now call for them to be objective observers.

This cannot be serious, can it? It has to be the late-night ramblings of someone with nothing else to watch on TV. Stuart Scott…real journalist? The guy is a sportscaster. He reads a teleprompter for a living. Does anyone with a microphone and a camera count as a journalist? (more on that tomorrow).

Does ESPN have to really be so objective and “journalistically responsible” that they can’t congratulate a player for a good game with a handshake. HOW DARE YOU SAY THANK YOU TO A GUEST.

Besides, doesn’t ESPN own the rights to that game? They paid for the rights to have exclusivity on the field, and thus, exclusivity with Lewis or the player of their choosing. It’s not really journalism when you pay for it. Or is it?

I’ve lost track. But if we’re taking issue with Stuart Scott giving a player a fist pump, I venture to guess a lot more people than just me have lost track too.

Ryan Ballengee had a great idea. Let’s start this game… The first thing I can think of is “uncle of primates.”

“If Stuart Scott is a journalist, then I’m…” could be a fantastic contest.

Scott was one of the inspirations for the iPhone application a friend of mine and I just made called “Pound It”. Check it out, I’ll send it to Tom Jones, who will most likely find some aspect of it to complain about.

    sincerely,
    certainly not a journalist
