Either Tony LaRussa Thinks We Are This Fucking Stupid, Or He Is

Posted by Dan Levy.

The St. Louis Cardinals are in Washington this weekend and it seems manager Tony LaRussa is looking for a little something to do on Saturday morning. Maybe check in at Stephen Strasburg’s wake? (What’s that…he’s not dead, just his elbow is?)

Perhaps a walk around the National Mall for LaRussa? Perhaps a stroll past the reflecting pool and up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial? Perhaps he’ll bring Albert Pujols with him too? Just a manager and his superstar player, taking a leisurely stroll in the park…TO A GLENN BECK RALLY.

But don’t worry, baseball fans, LaRussa would NEVER go to a political rally and would CERTAINLY NEVER bring Pujols with him if he was going to a political rally, which he’s not. Yes, Tony LaRussa thinks we are all this fucking stupid. See, he told reporters that he was promised this GLENN BECK RALLY is not political at all. St. Louis Today has the absolute fucking tripe LaRussa is trying to sell:

“I made it clear when we were approached: I said, ‘If it’s political, I wouldn’t even approach Albert with it.’ I don’t want to be there if it’s political,” La Russa said.

“I made the point several times: What is this about?” La Russa said Thursday, noting an understanding that invitations were ‘sent out across party lines, different disciplines, all kinds of stuff.

“I don’t know who’s going to be there, who’s going to accept it. But the gist of the day is not political. I think it’s a really good concept, actually.”

Neat, there’s going to be “all kinds of stuff” there…you know, from different disciplines across party lines. It’s certainly not political. Why, it says it right here on page two of the GLENN BECK RALLY informational packet:

Join the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and many more for THIS NON-POLITICAL EVENT that pays tribute to America’s service personnel and other upstanding citizens who embody our nation’s founding principles of integrity, truth and honor.

The all caps were mine, just to further underscore the fact of how non-political this event, headlined by Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin and promoted up and down the airwaves of Fox News, is.

And look, on the FAQs, right after who are the speakers (Beck, Palin and decorated military veteran Marcus Luttrell) and before the question about whether alcohol and fireworks are allowed (answer: no) is this question:

Is this a 9/12 or Tea Party rally?

No. The Restoring Honor Rally is neither a 9/12 nor a Tea Party rally. There will be absolutely no politics involved. This rally will honor the troops, unite the American people under the principles of integrity and truth, and make a pledge to restore honor within ourselves and our country.

Let’s not forget this non-political event is taking place on the same steps that Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech which, coincidentally took place ON THE SAME DATE.

Uh… thanks Dan for basically pointing out your political viewpoint in this “non-political” sports blog post.

I have been a Cardinals fan for almost 50 years, and yesterday I threw away every hat, shirt, jacket, blanket–everything that has a Cardinals logo on it. I do not begrudge ballplayers or managers their political opinions–they can be as conservative or as liberal as they like, and I’ll still root for my guys. But when they sit on the same stage as this racist demagogue and thereby legitimize his lunatic rantings, I wash my hands of the lot of them. The St. Louis Cardinals can go to hell. I’ll never spend another penny on them, nor watch or listen to any game or program that they are involved.

    “…involved in,” that is.

[...] went to a Glenn Beck rally. It’s that he clearly has no clue what he’s talking about. Actual Tony La Russa quote on the Beck rally: “I don’t know who’s going to be there, who’s going to accept it. But the [...]
