Jim Boeheim Thinks Being Tournament Tested Is “Bullshit”

Posted by Dan Levy.

I love Jim Boeheim. I want to hug the old curmudgeon sometimes. Eh, he’d probably just say it’s bullshit. From Tannenwald at Soft Pretzel Logic:

Reporter: You came up with an overtime win at home [against Rutgers on Saturday], and then a tough, tough game on the road here. Do games like this help you at this stage of the conference season?

Boeheim: I think that’s all [cow-based fertilizer], you know. All that stuff, it’s all [cow-based fertilizer]. We could play next week and get in the same game next week and lose. We could have ten of these in a row and win them, then get in a tournament and have one and you lose it. It’s all [cow-based fertilizer].

Tannenwald certainly transcribed this answer for a PG crowd. Make no mistake, the “bullshit” was flying from the acerbic coach last night.

Now, obviously Boeheim doesn’t believe it’s all bullshit. Surely, winning these close games is great now and gives the team a load of confidence, but it doesn’t mean a whole heap of anything come NCAA Tournament time when the shot may fall for the other team as time expires and Syracuse doesn’t get the chance to win in overtime (still bitter about the Rutgers loss this weekend, yes.) Still, Boeheim clearly thinks that winning by a lot is always better than winning by a little, whether its in the Big East or the NCAAs.

The next question — asking if the Big East schedule toughens teams up or beats them up — is where Boeheim took the opportunity to rant a little about everyone questioning Syracuse’s perennial out of conference cupcake schedule.

“They say, play a tough non-league schedule and it will help you for the league. Georgetown had the toughest non-league schedule in our conference and what did they start out in our league? 1-4. We had a fairly easy one and we were 5-0.

Does that mean our schedule wasn’t tough enough? Or it took a little bit longer to kick in that it wasn’t tough enough? That’s all nonsense. It’s what kind of team you have.”

He then went off on a hilarious tangent about a Syracuse radio host calling him out until the coach called in to the guy’s show before ending with, “I like to talk.”

Listen to the full audio at Philly.com and forward to somewhere around the 5:30 mark to hear the bullshits — and odd complaining logic — fly.
