Pissing Off All Of Kentucky & Washington DC Just Wasn’t Enough For Colin Cowherd

Posted by Dan Levy.

Colin Cowherd, whose radio show has been in and out of more markets than a shopping cart on Thanksgiving weekend, decided to get a little more attention for his ESPN mid-morning yakfest by ripping on John Wall again.

It’s so obvious what he’s doing. Cowherd chides Wall for doing a silly dance, but he’s the one taking the online media on this continuous stroll around the floor. At least have the courtesy to dip us, Colin. This dance is, frankly, ridiculous, but of course we’re going to take his lead and spin ourselves into the ground.

That’s what we do. Because we hate him. Because he’s terrible.

Kudos to Steinberg for transcribing. (I’ve been looking for the audio of this for about three hours, so if anyone has it, send it along and I’ll mockingly post it.)

“Let me tell you something: I’m a big believer, when it comes to quarterbacks and point guards. Who’s your dad? Who’s your dad? Because I like confrontational players, I don’t like passive aggressive. Strong families equal strong leaders. Talent? Overrated. Leadership? Underrated. And you can say, well, Colin, can you just go out and say anything crazy and get people to e-mail. That’s not the point. You wouldn’t e-mail if I was an idiot, because you wouldn’t listen to the show. You listen to the show because we make good points.

“I simply have a different opinion than you do on John Wall. I like the character of Derek Fisher, the rebounding and distribution ability of Rajon Rondo, that’s what I like. That’s what I want from my point guards. You celebrate the assists more than the buckets…..I know he’s great. So don’t confuse [me saying] John Wall’s no good. No, John Wall’s an A+ talent. I don’t think he’s ever gonna be an A+ win-championships point guard.”

Chris Littmann quickly pointed out that Rondo’s dad walked out when he was seven. And if you read this old story it took me 10 seconds to Google, Isiah Thomas — who Cowherd compared favorably to Wall in his previous rant on the rookie — grew up without his dad too. I guess the point in this is, moms are strong people too. Who your dad is doesn’t matter one lick to some kids. It’s who you are, and by all accounts (even though I’m on record that I hate the dancing, but for a totally different reason that Cowherd), Wall seems like a pretty good kid so far. And one helluva basketball player. That’s the worst part of this — not only is Cowherd being incendiary for the sake of getting attention, he’s actually incredibly wrong about Wall’s game, and the way he approaches his craft.

One more point: Cowherd mentioned that if he was an idiot, we wouldn’t email or listen to the show. I’m sure there are a good number of people who agree with Cowherd or like his style. But there are just as many people listen to his show simply because it’s on. That’s how ESPN Radio gets you; people have a strange inability to change the channel. The first rule of media is to learn the power of a strong lead-in.

Sure Cowherd is compelling and provocative, like the ESPN people always tell me. But sometimes he’s just cheap. That’s when we listen, or re-post; when he’s being cheap. We’re not listening because he makes good points. We’re calling him out for making yet another in a long line of unconscionably asinine ones.

Trying to make the case that Wall isn’t a championship player because his dad was a criminal, who, by the way, died from liver cancer in a hotel bathroom while on vacation when wall was just a kid is being nothing more than — as I said last time and will use again — shock jock schlock.

But hey, he’s provocative.

Yup. I had him on for years, just because of the inertia of him being after Mike & Mike. But I just turn the radio off at 10 now. The idiocy became unbearable.

I’ll be glad to pass on to my 5 year old that she should just pack it in, since her father died and all.

This just reminds me why I stopped listening to that buffoon.

I feel bad for his daughter, she’ll never be a leader.

Cowherd knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

Luckily I work while Cowpie is on the air. Then I just download the Kornheiser podcasts for my drive home (along with OnTheDL of course)
