Rich Eisen Smartly Moved to NFLN Pregame Show, Starting PODCAST

Posted by Dan Levy.

Last year I tried to watch every NFL pregame show for one week to write a column about what worked and what didn’t. I’d link it for you but the site I worked for died and I’m not entirely sure where the carcass is buried these days. Anyway, the point…when sifting through three hours of NFL Network coverage, one thing was glaringly absent: RICH EISEN WASN’T ON THE SHOW.

I thought he was sick and NFLN had Spero Dedes and Stacey Dales filling in for him. But no, Eisen was not scheduled for the pregame show. He handled the post game. I was profoundly perplexed.

With a Sunday night game on NBC, the NFL ostensibly gave the Peacock a monopoly on early-evening highlights by barring ESPN from continuing NFL Primetime in a timeslot up against another NFL game (even if, in theory, there was no game action going on at the time and it was all Bob Costas and Dan Patrick-led promotional pieces.) Anyway, the point…

Nobody ever thinks to go to the NFL Network after the games. Reluctantly, we all sat through Keith Olbermann bloviating over highlights while wishing for something better…when apparently there was. Eisen.

Now, with a new contract in tow, NFLN is reporting (H/T PFT and Fangs Bites) that Eisen is adding NFL GameDay Morning to his responsibilities.

“Rich has been an important contributor to the success of NFL Network since its launch,” said Steve Bornstein, NFL Network President and CEO.  “Fans will now wake up to Rich on Sunday mornings on our pregame show and for the first time, listen to him in a new role when he hosts a weekly podcast on NFL.com.”

“Talking about football 365-days-a-year for 7 years has been a dream come true, but even with all the great platforms NFL Network has afforded me I never imagined I would one day get to talk football 24/7 too,” said Eisen. “At what time does NFL GameDay Morning start again?”

Anyway, the real point…Eisen will also be starting a PODCAST hosted on NFL.com? I hope he allows guests to hijack his show like I allowed him to hijack ours (note: I allowed nothing, he just hijacked it and crushed me). Oh, speaking of that, Rich Eisen will be coming back on our show in the next few weeks. I’m sure we’ll have something to discuss.
